Weasel Words on Air Quality Monitoring

Weasel words from Ealing Labour Council, who for six years have shown utter contempt for the health and wellbeing of Southall's schoolchildren forced to live in the toxic stink created by Berkeley Group's unsafe development of the old Gasworks site. 1/11

Take Blair Peach Primary School, adjacent to the highly contaminated old Gasworks site in Southall.

In 2016, Ealing Labour Council removed a functioning air quality monitor from the school grounds.

Shortly after, Berkeley Group began digging up the toxic land in the open air.

The head teacher of Blair Peach Primary School reported to the school governors very strong smells from the gasworks site caused headaches and asthma among staff and children.

At the same governors meeting, Berkeley's head of construction at the Gasworks site was accepted as a Local Authority appointed school governor, with special responsibility for health and safety.

4/11

The governors had questioned whether there could be a conflict of interest, but were persuaded there wasn't as the Berkeley employee's role as school governor was to prevent any issues coming to light.

He also arranged for two dead rats to be removed from the nursery playground.

Berkeley Group are funding Ealing Labour Council to the tune of £12m, and paid over £100k expenses to Ealing Labour Council leaders and council officers to attend property festivals in Cannes every year since 2013, which Private Eye describes as "a booze 'n' hookerfest".

7/11

After the digging and cleaning of the poison land was completed, Ealing Labour Council installed a new air quality monitor a couple hundred yards from Blair Peach Primary School inside the construction site.

8/11

Paid for by Berkeley Group (who also paid the salary of Ealing's Contaminated Land Officer, whose main role was to ratify Berkeley's paperwork).

9/11

The new air quality monitor doesn't directly monitor any of the pollutants found in the contaminated land and which caused the headaches and asthma.

It records "urban background" emissions from cars.

10/11

High readings of pollutants including ozone have been deleted from the public record by the company responsible for their maintenance without any investigation.

Ealing Labour Council refuse to engage with local residents and community on these issues.
